For all those fans of the Ocarina of Time out there, finally a new adventure for Link that looks and feels like the classic. Twilight Princess has arrived with the same story line of save Hyrule (which works), new puzzles, and new areas to explore in another excellent quest from Nintendo’s base series. Playing Twilight Princess involves the same controller actions, so those who are familiar with previous games should have no trouble getting up and running with this new adventure. The twilight is like a dark shadow which is taking over Hyrule. A new addition to the game is Link can transform into the white wolf when he crosses into the twilight. Link has a sidekick in this series named Midna and when he is in wolf form, Midna aides him on his journey much like Navi did in Ocarina. As a wolf, Link can dig holes and his wolfy nose can sniff out hidden trails and objects.
While the story line has not evolved at all, Twilight Princess has mass appeal due the simple fact this is a true adventure game that will take you around 40 hours to complete. That is a journey, folks. This new game stays true to the Zelda format in all ways, and will satisfy all Zelda fans. There are the expected temples, forest, fire, and water along with a new sky temple. The puzzles can be difficult at times, but not overly so. Solving the difficult ones leads to a feeling of satisfaction. The solution is always readily available and usually overlooked by the player. If you do get stumped, wander around some more, and look at everything again. The battles are not particularly difficult for any of the bosses, so frustration factor is low for this game. This lets you continue on your journey without a lot of back tracking. The bosses are large and fiercesome-looking, but Link and his trusty sword along with keen observation of the bosses for their weak spot are usually all that are needed to defeat the baddies in this video game.
Link’s weapons are the same reliable assets in previous games. The hookshot, bow and arrow, sword, and shield are all present for Link to use when needed. As a wolf, Link cannot use these items. Dungeons and temple areas usually hold a bonus item Link will need to fight the boss of the temple, so keep your eyes open on your journey. There are tons of side games to play if you do get stumped in an area. Just go fishing for a little while to clear your head.
Portals come into play and greatly help getting from one location to another in Hyrule. Link can ride his horse again if you wish, but the portals practically eliminate the need. When teleporting from one location to another, Link’s figure turns into hundreds of small black squares which reform at the destination. Graphics for this game are excellent, as are most epic Zelda adventures. Bosses look big and scary, characters display a lot of emotion with their faces, and Link as the white wolf displays a lot of feeling with his wolfy eyes which really contributes to the heart of the story and brings the gamer into Link’s world. The graphics and the sounds associated with Link as we know him are present and accounted for. Hi-ya is safe and sound.
