You may have a coffee maker that can make your coffee at a predetermined time so that it is ready and waiting for you in the morning. You may also have lights that turn on when motion is detected. These are all great things, and are also the things that many in the future might take for granted when they are living in what will be called smart homes. You may think of this as something out of the Jetsons, but these home are probably closer than you think.

The beginnings of smart homes are already here. There are many things you can do with the aid of your computer. You can buy a program that will turn your lights on and off when you are away, and many like this so keep others from knowing that no one is home. You may be able to use your mobile phone to call home and tell your house to turn the lights on and off, or even to lock windows and doors you may have forgotten.

If you live where the seasons change, you might be able to call or text your computer to tell it to turn on the heat a few hours before your arrive. That way, when you arrive home, everything is toasty warm for you. Smart homes may even be able to open and close your drapes when you want, and might even do some cleaning tasks, as long as the machinery is available. Can you imagine never having to turn on the sprinklers or to wash your own windows? These homes may be able to eliminate all of that.

You may have seen movies where people walk into their homes and say ‘lights’ when they want the lights on. That might be something standard in the future. Smart homes will be designed to make life easier, and to make things much safer. They might even be able to keep an eye on what you kids are doing when you are away by monitoring television and computer content. The list of things that these smart homes might do is almost endless, and many have yet to be imagined.
